The software they run looks and feels like a derivative of Akai’s new PC-based MPC software, and they support switching between the standalone mode, and a “controller mode” when connected to a PC. The two new MPCs also have modern connectivity, like support for high-capacity SD cards, an internal SATA drive, USB sticks and MIDI controllers, as well as WiFi and Bluetooth. They are standalone like the classics in the series, but present much more modern, touchscreen-based user interfaces, supplemented by hardware buttons to naviage the software, in addition to the defining feature of the MPCs, the 4x4 grid of pressure-sensitive pads used for finger drumming. The latest MPCs (the MPC Live and MPC X) are the first in a number of years to run without being tethered to a PC or Mac. The MPC machines have played a defining role in house and hip-hop production, and also been very popular in other genres of electronic music. It is a sampler, sequencer, and effects box, the latest of a series of “Music Production Studios” that started in the 1980’s. The Akai MPC Live is a musical instrument released in 2017.
